Probe into Bassey daughter death

Dame Shirley Bassey

Police have confirmed they are making fresh inquiries into the death of Dame Shirley Bassey’s daughter.

Samantha Novak, 21, was found face-down in the River Avon near Bristol in 1985. The death was believed to be suicide.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokeswoman said it was investigating a claim that convicted killer Michael Moffat, 47, was involved in the death.

She said the mother of Moffat’s victim had written to police saying that her daughter had alleged he was involved.

Moffat, originally from Edinburgh, was jailed for 11 years for killing his lover Penny Beale, 31, in Hastings, East Sussex in 2001.

He is alleged to have claimed he was in a relationship with Ms Novak when she died. Moffat is currently held in a Scottish prison.

Mother’s letter

In 2009 Dame Shirley said she was suspicious of the death.

The police spokeswoman told the BBC: "The mother of Moffat’s victim wrote to us with some information in the last couple of weeks.

"Her daughter had said that Moffat told her he was involved in the murder of Samantha Novak.

"We looked at the circumstances surrounding the death six months ago after comments made by Dame Shirley Bassey.

"There was nothing from the coroner’s report to suggest it was murder rather than suicide.

"This information is obviously additional so we are making fresh inquiries."</p

Paul Merton angered by film snub

Paul Merton

Comedian Paul Merton has criticised a Bristol film festival director after he was dropped from this year’s event.

The star has posted a letter to fans on his website attacking the "self appointed director" Chris Daniels.

For the past five years Mr Merton has introduced the Bristol Slapstick Silent Festival with a Gala event.

In his letter Mr Merton says: "I’m sorry that Chris Daniels doesn’t share other people’s faith in my continued ability to attract audiences."

Mr Merton said: "The continued loyalty of the Bristol audience was very special to me and was matched by my loyalty to them.

‘Very saddened’

"At the end of every exceptional Gala evening, I’ve stood on the stage and promised to return with more delights the following year.

"So you could have knocked me down with a custard pie last August when Chris Daniels emailed my agent to say he was dropping my Gala Night because he believed that we would struggle to sell tickets!!

"This was presented to me as a fait accompli. No discussion, no debate. Your Gala Night isn’t happening. I suppose I was ’sacked’."

A statement provided by the volunteer-run festival’s steering group said: "The Slapstick steering group is very saddened by the letter posted on Paul’s website.

"Paul has been a generous supporter of silent film events in Bristol for many years and we all recognise, and value, the great help we have received from him in attracting new and younger audiences."

This year’s Slapstick Festival runs from 21-24 January. </p
