Children’s writer tops UK loans

Dame Jacqueline Wilson

Children's writer Dame Jacqueline Wilson is the most borrowed author of the past decade in the UK.

Wilson's books, which include Double Act, were borrowed from libraries more than 16 million times since 2000.

Bestseller The Story Of Tracy Beaker, is the single most borrowed book over the same period, according to figures released by Public Lending Right (PLR).

However US thriller writer James Patterson was the most borrowed writer from June 2008 to June 2009.

It is an accolade he has now held for three consecutive years after toppling Dame Jacqueline from the number one spot in 2007.

His books were loaned more than 1.5 million times over the year, with his book Sail named as the most borrowed title of the year.

But he is only the fifth most borrowed author over the last 10 years, lagging behind Wilson, and romantic novelists Danielle Steel, Catherine Cookson and Josephine Cox.

Steel, whose titles include Star, Echoes and Sisters, is the only writer to appear in the most borrowed author top 10 every year since 1999.

Her books were borrowed more than 14 million times over the decade.

After Wilson's Tracy Beaker, JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban was the most borrowed title, followed by the Potter titles Chamber Of Secrets and Goblet Of Fire.

Cookson's The Thursday Friend was the fifth most borrowed title of the decade.
